Fresh Breeze for Newport – Barrons.com

Where salty breezes blow, money often follows. Europeans have the French Riviera. Asians have Bali. The American equivalent may well be Newport.

As far back as the 1800s, this Rhode Island coastal town was a favored summer resort for prosperous Southerners trying to flee the heat. Later came still-wealthier members of New York society; the cream of Mrs. Astor’s 400 whiled away July in the era before air conditioning. One could call it the Hamptons of the Gilded Age, except that the wealth on display in Newport makes today’s Hamptons look downright democratic.

New England‘s Riviera has more than warm breezes going for it. The bluffs make a magnificent showcase for impressive houses. The Atlantic delivers up fresh seafood daily. And thanks to an accident of geography, the region is full of sheltered harbors that lead to wide open bays, eventually flowing all the way to the Atlantic. Which is why, if you enter the phrase “sailing capital of the world” into a search engine, Newport is the first thing to pop up.

Well, Newport and its sailors are about to get a lot of attention. The region will soon be the site of a series of special races designed to make competitive sailing, once the exclusive province of the fabulously wealthy, into a spectator sport for the masses. As Keith Stokes of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corp. describes it, “It looks as much like Nascar as sailing. A lot of spills, a lot of thrills, a lot of excitement.”

A few Newport dowagers must be nervously knotting their pearls. Not Nascar, but the Formula One of sailing, the America’s Cup, is what one normally associates with Newport. The America’s Cup famously pits the best designers and seafarers the world over against each other, and is run every three to four years in the home port of the ship that last won the trophy. For much of the 1930s through to 1983, the cup resided in Newport, until Australia took the title. In 2010, Larry Ellison and his BMW Oracle Racing Team won it back for the U.S.; Oracle will defend the cup in September 2013 at the Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco Bay.

Sea Notes: Figawi sets sail next weekend | SouthCoastToday.com

Figawi Race

Figawi Race (Photo credit: Eric Herot)

With more than 200 boats registered for the 41st annual Figawi Race, the summer sailing season gets under way next Saturday with a blast of the starting gun off Hyannisport.

Many New Bedford area boats, skippers, and crews have registered for the spring classic. In addition, high school teams including Dartmouth, Bishop Stang, Tabor, and others compete in the Figawi Invitational in Club 420‘s inside the Nantucket Boat Basin.

Last year’s Figawi was mired in fog, rain and lack of wind. But previous years have seen everything from heavy northeasterlies to the prevailing southwest wind. Organizers are hoping for sunny skies and fair winds this year, too.

The Figawi takes off in the waters outside Lewis Bay, just off the Hyannisport jetty, racing in a pursuit format, with skippers assigned a starting time based on their handicap. The last, and usually largest, boats in the fleet take off by noontime, with the entire fleet racing to be the first to cross the finish line off Nantucket island. With all or most competitors racing over the finish line, a great observation area is Brant Point Light and the surround beach.

Saturday night and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend are filled with chowder fests, clam and lobster bakes, and live bands on the island for the crews, most of whom stay in private homes, hotels and inns and aboard their vessels for the weekend.

Red Bull could fill America’s Cup with cool – San Francisco Business Times

Red Bull‘s deal with the America’s Cup could help spark enduring interest in the event.

San Franciscans love a party.

Blow up some fireworks. Pump loud music in the streets. Blaze klieg lights outside a theater.

These are the kinds of things that pique our curiosity, draw us out of our homes and to where the action is.

Yacht racing won’t do that — not for long stretches of time such as the July to September period in 2013 when dozens of races will be held in San Francisco Bay to determine the boat that will challenge for the America’s Cup.

A big party? That’s another story.

That’s why Thursday’s Red Bull announcement with the America’s Cup could be a very big deal.

Red Bull stands for big, wild parties and other entertainment that may or may not result in bruises or contusions. It screams youth and hip and vod-bomb and oh-my-God-did-you-just-see/do/hear-that?!

Red Bull links itself with the kind of outrageous events that could well translate into the kind of energy that San Franciscans love; the kind of events that will continue to draw San Franciscans down to the waterfront well after the novelty of yacht racing has worn off.

Experience the Thrill of Sailing Aboard Elena Racing Schooner

One of the world’s best luxury yachts, Elena was originally designed by Nathanael Herreshoff in 1910. However, unlike many yachts which were designed for cruising, Elena was originally built for racing. Herreshoff crafted her keel using a lower center of gravity—an innovation for the time. Her build won the vessel many awards including the 1928 Trans-Atlantic Race. While Elena still races, she also plays host to those seeking the beautiful vacation destinations.

Elena features a main salon furnished with rich, red leather couches and beautifully polished mahogany bookshelves, tables, and paneling. An expansive skylight allows natural light to fill the cabin, while modern amenities such as a large television and surround system are concealed to keep Elena’s aesthetics in keeping with her historical roots.

Those interested in chartering Elena will be delighted in the gorgeous stateroom outfitted with mahogany paneling, an office-sized desk, and a large bathroom. An additional four guest staterooms provide en suite bathrooms, iPod and iPad technology, as well as period accents. Dining on Elena is an elegant affair, whether on the ship’s deck or in the dining room. Meals are created by one of the yacht’s top chefs who will prepare customizable menus to suit any taste.

Elena is also available for racing charter. Though she dates back to the 1900’s she has been redesigned to include today’s most current navigation and communication systems. She continues to win regattas throughout the Atlantic due to the combination of her timeless design and the addition of modern technology. For more information visit SchoonerElena.com.
